Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London), was raised by her mother, her grandmother and godparents. Her father abandoned her family. As a young girl, Catherine Ford struggled with an obsessive compulsive disorder. She also experienced anxiety due to the word association. Ford began acting during her teens and became a member of the National Youth Theatre. The school she was accepted to was Sylvia Young Theatre School. After a couple of weeks, she realized Sylvia Young Theatre School was not the right place right for her. Ford rather than applying to Central School of Speech and Drama and securing a place at the third time, applied and won acceptance to Central School of Speech and Drama. One of her classmates was Shaun Dingwall, who would play a part in the role of Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford's debut on TV was a 1991 episode Surgical Spirit. By the when she finished her studies, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate made her television debut in 1991, appearing on shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. as well as London's Burning. Tate's regular involvement in the theatre brought her into the Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 Season. Tate's stand-up comedy style, which she began adding to her set in 1996, quickly gained the attention of her peers.
